Why do carpeted stairs get dirty and worn first?
Because every trip up or down puts a foot in the same small place, and the front edge of each step, the nosing, takes the weight and the twist of the foot as it turns. Grit pressed into the pile there cuts the fibres, which is why stairs look flattened and grey long before the rooms above them. That is our reading of where the wear comes from. The Carpet and Rug Institute's care advice puts it simply: vacuum high-traffic areas most often, and stop dirt at the door.
How should stairs be vacuumed?
| Part of the step | Tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start at the top | Any | Dirt falls down the stairs, so you never re-dirty a cleaned step |
| The tread | Upholstery tool or a handheld with a brush | Lifts grit from the flat part where feet land |
| The nosing (front edge) | Upholstery tool, slow passes | Where grit does the most damage to the pile |
| Tread meets riser | Crevice tool | Dust and pet hair collect in the corner and along the sides |
| The riser | Upholstery tool | Toes scuff it; dust settles on it |
Weekly is the minimum for stairs in a family home, and more often with a shedding dog. The CRI notes that regular vacuuming "can also have the largest impact on the air you breathe by removing dust, dirt, allergens, and particles".
How do I spot clean a stair?
The same way as any carpet, with more care, because a stair is small and liquid runs down the riser. Blot with a white cloth, apply a little of the CRI's detergent solution (a quarter teaspoon of dish detergent in a cup of lukewarm water) to the cloth rather than the carpet, work from the edge of the spot toward the centre, then rinse with plain water and blot dry. The CRI warns not to scrub or use a brush, since "bristles and scrubbing can damage carpet". For specific stains, see pet urine and winter salt, which is the stain stairs collect most.
Can I use a rented carpet cleaner on stairs?
Only with a hand tool, and carefully. Full-size rental machines are built for floors and are awkward and unsafe to balance on a step. The CRI says small hand extractors are useful "for quick cleanups", but that "these quick clean-ups don't take the place of periodic deep cleaning". The bigger risks on stairs are overwetting, which soaks the pad on a surface that is hard to dry, and leaving soap in the pile. More on that in rented machine or professional clean.
Are stairs covered by my carpet warranty?
Check the warranty itself, because it varies by product. Some name stairs explicitly; Mohawk's SmartLIFE carpet warranty, for example, lists "Stairs Included" beside its wear and texture coverage. Whatever the warranty covers, the maker usually ties it to cleaning: Mohawk's carpet care guide says it "requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months". Keep the receipt.
What does it cost to have stairs professionally cleaned?
At Klein's, a standard staircase is about $60, confirmed in writing before any work starts. Stairs done with other rooms count toward the $200 minimum; for example, two bedrooms and a staircase reach it. Winding stairs, open-sided stairs and runners are quoted when we know what they are. Every step is cleaned by hand; see stair carpet cleaning and the full price list.
