How does carpet actually get clean?

Most of the dirt in a carpet is not on top. It is dry grit worked down to the base of the pile and oily soil stuck to the fibres, which is why vacuuming alone leaves the grey traffic lanes in place. Klein's cleans in the order the carpet makers' own care guides describe for hot water extraction:

Hot water extraction in five steps A cross-section of carpet pile. Step one, vacuuming lifts dry soil. Step two, a pre-spray loosens oil. Step three, agitation through the pile. Step four, a hot rinse flushes the pile and is vacuumed straight back out. Step five, the pile is groomed to dry evenly. 1 Vacuum dry soil out 2 Pre-spray loosens oil 3 Agitate through the pile 4 Extract rinsed, pulled out 5 Groom dries evenly Carpet pile in cross-section, left to right through one cleaning
Hot water extraction, the method carpet makers name in their care guides, in five steps.
  1. Vacuum Dry soil comes out first. Most of the dirt in a carpet is dry and loose, and wetting it only turns it to mud.
  2. Pre-spray A cleaning solution goes on traffic lanes and spots to loosen the oily soil that vacuuming leaves behind.
  3. Agitate The solution is worked through the pile so it reaches the base of the fibres, not only the tips.
  4. Rinse and extract Hot water flushes the pile and is vacuumed straight back out, taking the loosened soil and the solution with it.
  5. Groom The pile is brushed in one direction so it dries evenly and stands up.

Carpet at home, carpet at work

A bedroom and an office lobby need different visits, different schedules and different people signing off on them. Pick the one you are here for.

Why a custodian cleans carpet differently

School custodians look after carpet that hundreds of people cross every day, and they are judged on the parts most people never look at: the edges along the baseboards, the front of every stair, the strip just inside the door. Klein's founder did that job for the Halton District School Board before starting this company, and brought the habits along.

In practice that means the traffic lanes and entrances get the most attention, stairs are done by hand rather than skimmed, and you are told before the work starts which marks are soil that will lift and which are damage that will not. Read how Klein's started.

What does carpet cleaning cost?

Klein's prices by the area cleaned, which is what the Carpet and Rug Institute's hiring advice recommends: "Pricing should be based on the area cleaned, not by the number of rooms." Every price is confirmed in writing before any work starts.
