How long does carpet take to dry after cleaning?

After hot water extraction, home carpet usually needs several hours to dry, and the exact time depends on indoor humidity, air movement and how thick the carpet and pad are. The limit that matters is the one the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gives for any water in a home: materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will, in most cases, not grow mould. Moving air and a dehumidifier shorten drying the most. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, grooms the pile after every clean so it dries evenly.

What decides how long carpet takes to dry?

Carpet dries when the water left in the pile evaporates into the room and the room's air carries it away. Anything that slows either half slows the whole job. This is Klein's reading of how drying works in Hamilton and Halton homes, not a measured standard.

What is the real deadline for wet carpet?

The EPA's guide to mould, moisture and your home says: "If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow." The same guide lists "the underside of carpets and pads" among the places mould hides. A professional clean should leave carpet damp to the touch, not wet, and well inside that window. If carpet is still wet the next day, too much water went in or the room has no airflow.

How can I make carpet dry faster?

  • Set the furnace fan to on rather than auto, so air keeps moving through the house.
  • Run ceiling fans, or stand a floor fan so it blows across the carpet, not straight down at it.
  • In a basement, run a dehumidifier. Health Canada's dust mite advice names it for "damp areas such as basements".
  • In summer, air conditioning dries the air as well as cooling it.
  • Open windows only when it is dry outside. Health Canada's moisture guidance says to "open windows in dry weather or use fans as needed", and to keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%.

When can I walk on it and put the furniture back?

You can walk on damp carpet in clean socks; outdoor shoes carry grit straight into the wet pile. Keep pets off until it is dry, so paws do not track in the soil that was just taken out. Furniture that goes back on damp carpet should stay on the protective pads it was set on until the carpet is dry underneath, so wood stain and metal feet cannot mark the fibre.

Why do basements take longer?

A finished basement carpet sits on a concrete slab that stays cool, in a room with little moving air, and in many Hamilton and Burlington homes the basement is the dampest room in the house. Book basement carpet on a dry day if you can, run a dehumidifier before and after, and leave the door to the rest of the house open so the furnace can move air through it. The Hamilton carpet cleaning page covers basements on the Mountain in more detail.

What if the carpet smells musty afterwards?

A faint damp smell while carpet dries is normal and fades as it dries. A musty smell that is still there once the surface is dry usually means moisture is sitting in the pad, or there was an older problem underneath, such as pet urine, that the water reactivated. That is worth a phone call rather than a wait; see pet urine and odour for why the pad matters.
