Pet urine and odour in carpet: what cleaning fixes, and what it cannot
Fresh pet accidents usually come out of carpet with prompt blotting and a professional clean. Old urine is different: once it has soaked through the carpet into the pad, and sometimes the subfloor, the smell comes from underneath, and cleaning the carpet's surface cannot reach it. What can cleaning fix, and what can it not?

What should I do the moment it happens?
- Blot, do not rub. Paper towels pressed down, changed until they come up dry.
- Do not reach for bleach. It can take the colour out of carpet, and Transport Canada's CANUTEC warns that bleach reacts with the urea in urine to form chloramine compounds.
- Rinse lightly with cool water and blot again. Do not use a home steam cleaner on it: the Carpet and Rug Institute's care advice warns that "the heat will set the stain and the smell".
- Note the spot so it gets pre-treated at the next professional clean.
Why does the smell come back on humid days?
Because what is left in the pad or subfloor dries into residue that gives off more odour when it takes on moisture. That is why a carpet can smell fine after cleaning and worse a few humid weeks later. It is a sign the source is under the carpet, not on it.
How should I tell you about pet areas?
List them when you ask for a quote: which rooms, how old the problem is, and whether the smell returns in damp weather.
