How do you get muddy paw prints out of carpet?

Let wet mud dry, then break it up and vacuum it away, because rubbing wet mud pushes it deeper into the pile. Then follow the Carpet and Rug Institute's two steps for mud: a weak dish detergent solution, a quarter teaspoon per cup of lukewarm water, worked in with a white cloth and blotted, then a lukewarm water rinse. If a brown shadow stays, it needs a professional clean. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, cleans spring and fall mud out of pet homes.

Should I clean mud wet or let it dry?

Let it dry if it is wet and spread thin. The CRI's general steps are to "gently scrape up semi-solids with a rounded spoon" and to "break up solids and vacuum", and dried mud is a solid. If a paw print is thick and wet, lift the top off with a spoon, working toward the centre, then leave the rest to dry. Rubbing wet mud with a cloth is the one thing that reliably makes a paw print into a stain.

What is the CRI's method for mud?

Mud on carpet, from the CRI's Spot Solver
StepWhat to doDetail
1. Dry and vacuumLet it dry, break it up, vacuumSlow passes; get every loose grain out first
2. Detergent solution1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent per cup of lukewarm waterOn a white cloth, edges toward the centre, then blot
3. Warm waterRinse with lukewarm water and blot dryDetergent left behind "may cause rapid soiling"
4. Call a professionalWhen a shadow remainsUsually fine clay down in the pile

The order is from the CRI's Spot Solver entry for mud, which is shorter than most stain entries: detergent, warm water, then a professional.

Why does a mud stain come back after it dries?

Because clay is fine enough to sit low in the pile, and as the carpet dries, water wicks up the fibres and carries it back to the tips. More blotting and another lukewarm rinse usually solves it. Clay soil, common in gardens around Hamilton and Burlington, is the most stubborn; that local note is our observation rather than a source's.

How do I stop paw prints at the door?

  • A mat outside and a second absorbent mat inside, as the CRI advises: "stop dirt at the door by using mats outside and in".
  • An old towel on a hook by the door, and a habit of a quick paw wipe in wet weather.
  • A gate or closed door between the back entrance and the carpeted rooms on the muddiest days.
  • Vacuuming the first few metres of carpet past the door more often in spring and fall.

For winter, when the mud comes with salt, see winter salt stains.

When does mud need a professional clean?

When the traffic path from the door has turned grey, when shadows stay after rinsing, or when the mud is on stairs or pale wool. A clean by hot water extraction rinses the full depth of the pile where the clay sits. See home carpet cleaning and the rest of the pet carpet care section.
