Fresh pet accidents usually come out of carpet with prompt blotting and a professional clean. Old urine is different: once it has soaked through the carpet into the pad, and sometimes the subfloor, the smell comes from underneath, and cleaning the carpet's surface cannot reach it. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, pre-treats pet areas and will tell you before starting whether a spot is surface soil or a pad problem, which may need the pad replaced.

## What can cleaning fix, and what can it not?

Pet accidents in carpet, and what each one takes SituationCan cleaning fix it?Why A fresh accident, blotted quicklyUsuallyIt stayed in the carpet fibre and never reached the pad A stain visible, little smellOften, largelyThe stain is in the fibre; some urine stains change the dye and remain as a mark Smell comes back after cleaning, or when humidNot from the surfaceUrine in the pad or subfloor; moisture reactivates the smell The same spot used for monthsRarely on its ownPad replacement, and sometimes sealing the subfloor, are usually needed

This is Klein's plain summary from experience, not a manufacturer's statement.

## What should I do the moment it happens?

1. Blot, do not rub. Paper towels pressed down, changed until they come up dry.
2. Do not reach for bleach. It can take the colour out of carpet, and Transport Canada's [CANUTEC](https://tc.canada.ca/en/dangerous-goods/canutec/articles/improper-mixing-common-household-cleaning-products) warns that bleach reacts with the urea in urine to form chloramine compounds.
3. Rinse lightly with cool water and blot again. Do not use a home steam cleaner on it: the Carpet and Rug Institute's [care advice](https://carpet-rug.org/carpet-for-homes/cleaning-and-maintenance/) warns that "the heat will set the stain and the smell".
4. Note the spot so it gets pre-treated at the next professional clean.

## Why does the smell come back on humid days?

Because what is left in the pad or subfloor dries into residue that gives off more odour when it takes on moisture. That is why a carpet can smell fine after cleaning and worse a few humid weeks later. It is a sign the source is under the carpet, not on it.

## How should I tell you about pet areas?

List them when you [ask for a quote](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/quote/): which rooms, how old the problem is, and whether the smell returns in damp weather. That decides whether the job is a clean or a clean plus a conversation about the pad. Households with pets also belong at the short end of the cleaning schedule; see [how often to clean carpets](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/guides/how-often-to-clean-carpets/).
