Why dogs and cats return to one carpet spot: lingering odour, marking and medical causes, what the ASPCA advises, and the cleaning that breaks the cycle.

Usually because the spot still smells like a toilet to the animal, even when it smells clean to you. The ASPCA warns that ammonia cleaners can draw a pet back, because urine contains ammonia, and advises an enzymatic pet-odour cleaner instead. Marking and medical problems cause it too, so a vet should rule out a medical cause first. Urine that reached the pad keeps the scent alive. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, finds and treats pet areas at every clean.

## Why would cleaning bring a pet back?

Because of what it was cleaned with. The ASPCA's [urine marking guidance](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/common-cat-behavior-issues/urine-marking-cats) says: "Do not clean up accidents with an ammonia-based cleanser. Urine contains ammonia, so cleaning with ammonia can attract your cat that same spot to urinate again." Many all-purpose and glass cleaners are ammonia-based. Its alternative is an "enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors"; see [do enzyme cleaners work](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/pets/enzyme-cleaners-for-pet-urine/).

## When is it a medical problem?

When the change is sudden. The ASPCA's [litter box guidance](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/common-cat-behavior-issues/litter-box-problems) tells cat owners to "see a veterinarian to rule out this possible medical problem", and the same caution makes sense for a house-trained dog who starts having accidents. A carpet cleaner cannot fix a urinary problem, and no amount of cleaning will stop accidents that have a medical cause. Your veterinarian is the first call; we are the second.

## How is marking different from an accident?

Marking is a message, not a full bladder. The ASPCA describes it: "Urine marks are usually deposited on vertical surfaces", and "marking on a vertical surface is known as spraying." It also notes that cats whose world is predictable, and who are spayed or neutered, "have little reason to mark and probably will not". For carpet, marking means the edges: the bottom of curtains, furniture legs and the carpet along the baseboard, which a cleaner should treat as well as the floor.

## Does telling a pet off help?

Not after the fact. The ASPCA's [house training guidance](https://www.aspca.org/news/house-training-your-dog-or-puppy) is plain: "a dog will not learn anything by being scolded for a past accident, even one a few minutes old. Just clean it up and soldier on." The cleaning is the part that changes what the spot smells like.

## How do I break the cycle?

1. See your vet to rule out a medical cause.
2. Find every spot, including old ones; they are usually along walls, behind furniture and in quiet corners.
3. Clean each with an enzymatic cleaner, never ammonia, and keep the pet off until dry.
4. If the smell returns on humid days, the pad is holding it; see [pet urine and odour](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/residential/pet-urine-and-odour/).
5. Have the room professionally cleaned with pet areas pre-treated, so the whole carpet starts from neutral.
