Yes, when the cleaner reaches everywhere the urine went. The ASPCA advises cleaning pet accidents "thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors", and never with ammonia. Use enough to soak as deep as the urine did, leave it for the time on the label, blot, and keep pets away until it is dry, because the ASPCA says most enzyme cleaners can cause mild stomach upset. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, tells you when urine has gone past the carpet into the pad.

## What does the ASPCA actually recommend?

Two things, together. In its guidance on [urine marking](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/common-cat-behavior-issues/urine-marking-cats): "Clean accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors. You can find this kind of cleaner at most pet stores." And: "Do not clean up accidents with an ammonia-based cleanser. Urine contains ammonia, so cleaning with ammonia can attract your cat that same spot to urinate again." The same logic applies to a dog returning to a spot it can still smell; that extension is ours.

## How do I use an enzyme cleaner so it works?

Using an enzymatic cleaner on a carpet urine spot (follow your product's label where it differs) StepWhat to doWhy 1. BlotPress white paper towel onto the spot until almost nothing comes upLess urine left means less for the cleaner to break down 2. Rinse lightlyCool water, then blot againThe CRI says to rinse urine with cool water, not hot 3. ApplyEnough to wet the carpet as deep as the urine went, a little wider than the stainThe cleaner only works where it touches the urine 4. WaitThe dwell time on the label; do not blot earlyEnzymes need time to work 5. DryBlot the excess, then let it dry fully, with air movingThe ASPCA says to let it dry before pets return

The steps are our plain sequence from the ASPCA's and the CRI's advice; the product label governs the details.

## Why must pets stay off until it dries?

Because pets lick their paws. The ASPCA's guide to [household products](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/poisonous-household-products) says: "Most enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset so ensure that these products dry prior to letting the pet into any area where they were used." Close the door or put up a gate until the spot is dry to the touch.

## Can I use an enzyme cleaner after other cleaners?

Rinse first. Detergent, vinegar or any spot remover left in the pile sits between the enzymes and the urine, and some products may not work well together; read both labels. Never mix anything with bleach: Transport Canada's [CANUTEC](https://tc.canada.ca/en/dangerous-goods/canutec/articles/improper-mixing-common-household-cleaning-products) warns that urea in urine reacts with bleach to form chloramine compounds. The full stain sequence is in [getting urine out of carpet](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/pets/pet-urine-out-of-carpet/).

## When will an enzyme cleaner not be enough?

When the urine reached the pad or the subfloor and the cleaner cannot follow it there, which is common with old spots and with a pet that has used the same place for weeks. The sign is a smell that returns on humid days after the surface looks clean. At that point the honest options are a professional assessment and, often, pad replacement; see [pet urine and odour](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/residential/pet-urine-and-odour/). A spot that keeps getting used is a behaviour question too: [why a pet keeps using the same spot](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/pets/pet-keeps-peeing-on-same-spot/).
