Most of the dirt in a carpet is not on top. It is dry grit worked down to the base of the pile and oily soil stuck to the fibres, which is why vacuuming alone leaves the grey traffic lanes in place. Klein's cleans in the order the carpet makers' own care guides describe for hot water extraction: Hot water extraction, the method carpet makers name in their care guides, in five steps. 1. **Vacuum** Dry soil comes out first. Most of the dirt in a carpet is dry and loose, and wetting it only turns it to mud. 2. **Pre-spray** A cleaning solution goes on traffic lanes and spots to loosen the oily soil that vacuuming leaves behind. 3. **Agitate** The solution is worked through the pile so it reaches the base of the fibres, not only the tips. 4. **Rinse and extract** Hot water flushes the pile and is vacuumed straight back out, taking the loosened soil and the solution with it. 5. **Groom** The pile is brushed in one direction so it dries evenly and stands up.
