# Rented Carpet Cleaner vs Professional Cleaning: Which?

What a rented carpet extractor does well, where overwetting and soap residue come from, what Mohawk's warranty asks for, and when renting makes sense.

For a quick freshen-up between cleans, a rented machine is useful. It is not a substitute for a professional deep clean: the Carpet and Rug Institute says quick clean-ups "don't take the place of periodic deep cleaning", and Mohawk's care guide "requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months" to keep the warranty. The common rental problems are overwetting and soap left in the pile. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, does the professional clean.

## What is the actual difference?

A rented extractor compared with a professional clean (general comparison) Rented machineProfessional clean Pre-treatmentWhatever product came with the rentalTraffic lanes, spots and pet areas treated separately first Water removalLimited suction, so more water stays in the carpetStronger extraction pulls more of the rinse water back out ResidueEasy to use too much soap and rinse too littleRinse step designed to take the cleaner back out WarrantyNot "professional" cleaning, which some warranties requireReceipt to keep for the warranty CostThe rental plus solution, and your dayAt Klein's, about 50 cents a square foot, confirmed in writing before any work starts

The rows on suction and residue are our general comparison of the equipment classes, not a test of any particular machine.

## Why does carpet get dirty again fast after a rental clean?

Usually because soap was left behind. The CRI's [Spot Solver](https://carpet-rug.org/spot-solver/salt/) warns that "many spot removal solutions leave residues in the carpet that may attract soil", that detergent residue "may cause rapid soiling", and: "Never use any of the solutions in concentrations stronger than those recommended." With a rental, the temptation is to add more solution to the tank for a stronger clean, which does the opposite. If you rent, use less product than the label allows and do a final pass with plain water.

## What about overwetting?

It is the other common problem. A machine that puts more water in than it takes out leaves the pad soaked, and wet carpet that stays wet is a mould risk: the EPA says "mold can grow on wood, drywall, carpet and furniture if they remain wet for more than 24 hours". Do more slow drying passes than wet ones, run fans and a dehumidifier afterwards, and read [how long carpet takes to dry](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/guides/how-long-does-carpet-take-to-dry/).

## Does a rental clean count for my carpet warranty?

Probably not, if your warranty says "professional". Mohawk's [carpet care guide](https://mohawk.blob.core.windows.net/bmf/Care/care-carpet.pdf) says: "Mohawk requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months using cleaning products, equipment or systems that carry the CRI Seal of Approval." Other makers word it differently; read the care section of yours. See [steam cleaning vs dry cleaning](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/guides/steam-cleaning-vs-dry-carpet-cleaning/) for what the warranties name.

## When does renting make sense?

For a single spill on a small rug, a quick freshen-up between professional cleans, or carpet that is about to be replaced anyway. The CRI's [care advice](https://carpet-rug.org/carpet-for-homes/cleaning-and-maintenance/) suggests small hand extractors "for quick cleanups of pet accidents", with the reminder that they do not replace periodic deep cleaning. For the whole house, the stairs and anything under warranty, book a professional; see [Klein's prices](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/prices/).
