# Why Is My Carpet Rippling, and Will Cleaning Fix It?

Why wall-to-wall carpet ripples or buckles, why it can show more after a wet cleaning or on humid days, and why power restretching, not cleaning, is the fix.

Cleaning will not fix it. Ripples in wall-to-wall carpet nearly always mean the carpet was not stretched tightly enough when it was installed, or has loosened since. The Carpet and Rug Institute's installation standard requires carpet to be "power-stretched" to minimize wrinkling and rippling, and its advice for ripples is that it "may be necessary to professionally restretch the carpet". Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, will point ripples out before a clean.

## What causes carpet to ripple?

Slack. Wall-to-wall carpet is held flat by tension, hooked onto tack strip around the room. The CRI's [installation tips](https://carpet-rug.org/carpet-for-homes/installation-tips/) say its standard "requires that carpet must be power-stretched for proper installation to minimize wrinkling and rippling". Carpet that was knee-kicked into place instead of power-stretched, or that has relaxed over years of furniture being dragged across it, has slack, and slack shows up as ripples.

Common causes of rippling carpet (Klein's reading, beyond the CRI's installation standard) CauseWhat you noticeThe fix Not power-stretched at installationRipples within the first year or twoRestretch; ask the installer, since the CRI says to call your retailer Furniture dragged across itA ripple in line with where heavy pieces were movedRestretch High humidityRipples that come and go with the seasons, often in basementsDehumidify; restretch if they stay Overwetting during cleaningRipples while damp that mostly settle as it driesDry fast; restretch if they remain once dry Backing letting go (delamination)A soft bubble that feels loose, often near a seamRepair or replace; not a cleaning problem

## Why did the ripples appear after the carpet was cleaned?

Because damp carpet can relax temporarily. The backing takes up a little moisture during a wet clean, and carpet that was already on the loose side shows its slack while it dries. In most cases the ripples settle as the carpet dries. If they are still there once it is fully dry, the carpet was loose before the clean; the cleaning made it visible rather than causing it. That is our explanation from how carpet behaves, not a CRI statement. Fast drying keeps it to a minimum; see [how long carpet takes to dry](https://kleinscarpetclean.com/guides/how-long-does-carpet-take-to-dry/).

## Can a ripple be ironed or steamed out?

No. Heat does nothing about slack, and can damage synthetic fibres. The only lasting fix is to release the carpet from the tack strip, stretch it tight with a power stretcher, trim the extra and hook it back down. The CRI's own advice is to call your retailer if you notice wrinkles or ripples, because "it may be necessary to professionally restretch the carpet".

## Is rippling carpet a safety problem?

It can be. A ripple is a trip edge, especially in a hallway, at the top of stairs or where someone uses a walker. Get it restretched rather than living with it, and do not run a vacuum hard across a raised ripple, which wears a line into the pile along its top.

## Should carpet be restretched before or after cleaning?

Before, where you can. Restretching first means the cleaned carpet dries flat, and moving furniture out for the installer is a good moment to clean the whole floor. Klein's does not restretch carpet; that is an installer's job. Klein's will tell you before cleaning if it sees ripples, so the cleaning is never blamed for them.
