# Can Carpet Be Saved After a Basement Flood? (Hamilton)

When flooded basement carpet can be dried and cleaned and when it must go, the EPA's 24 to 48 hour line, and Hamilton's 2026 flood grant.

Only if the water was clean and the carpet can be thoroughly dried and cleaned within 24 to 48 hours. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says to throw away materials that soak up a lot of water and cannot be cleaned and dried, and flood water can carry sewage. Carpet soaked by a sewer backup should go. In Hamilton, the July and August 2026 rainstorms qualify for a city grant of up to $2,000. Klein's Carpet Cleaning, in Waterdown, cleans carpet once it is dry; it is not a flood restoration company.

## Which flooded carpet can be saved?

It depends on where the water came from and how fast it is dried. The EPA's [flood cleanup guidance](https://www.epa.gov/emergencies-iaq/flood-cleanup-protect-indoor-air-and-your-health) says: "You should throw away materials that soak up a lot of water and can't be cleaned and dried", and warns that "flood water can bring microorganisms, including from sewage and other sources, inside buildings".

## How long do I have?

About a day before mould becomes a real risk. The EPA says "mold can grow on wood, drywall, carpet and furniture if they remain wet for more than 24 hours", and its [mould guide](https://www.epa.gov/mold/brief-guide-mold-moisture-and-your-home) says materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will, in most cases, not grow it. Pull the water out, lift the carpet off the pad if you can, and get air and a dehumidifier going at once. A restoration company with industrial drying equipment is the right first call for a soaked basement; carpet cleaning comes after, once the carpet is dry and worth keeping.

## What help is there in Hamilton?

Two City of Hamilton programs, for different things.

- **The 2026 Rainstorms Compassionate Grant.** The city has set up "a one-time compassionate grant of up to $2,000 for eligible homeowners and tenants whose residential properties were affected by flooding from the severe July and August 2026 rainstorms". It covers the storms of July 21, July 28, August 2 and August 7, 2026, for eligible costs not covered by insurance. Details and eligibility are on the city's [grant page](https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/home-property/2026-rainstorms-compassionate-grant).
- **The Protective Plumbing Program**, to make the next flood less likely. The city offers owners of single-family homes "a grant (subsidy) of up to $2000 for the installation of a backwater valve and other eligible works", for homes built before January 1, 2012, with the full amount available through its pre-qualified contractors. See the [program page](https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/home-property/basement-flooding/protective-plumbing-program).

Both are the city's programs, not ours; check the pages for the current terms before relying on them.

## When can Klein's help?

Once the emergency is over: carpet that got wet from a clean source, was dried quickly, and needs the soil and water marks taken out; carpet in the rest of the house that took dirty foot traffic during the clean-up; and new carpet going down after replacement that should start its warranty with a professional cleaning schedule. Sewage-soaked carpet is not something any honest carpet cleaner should try to save.
